Black chickpea curry/Kadala curry is a healthy and delicious Kerala style vegetarian/vegan recipe. Black chickpeas are a great source of plant protein. The curry is served with chapati/puttu/appam etc.

Ingredients for Kadala Curry:
Black chickpeas β 1 cup (2 Β½ cups if soaked and cooked);
Onions β sliced, 2 Β½ cups;
Tomato β Β½ cup
Ginger and garlic β sliced, 1 tbsp each;
Green chillies β sliced, 1 or 2 (or as per taste);
Curry leaves β 8-10;
Dry red chillies β 2;
Mustard seeds β Β½ tsp;
Whole spices β Β½ tsp cumin(jeera), Β½ tsp fennel seeds (saunf), 1 green cardamom (elaichi); 1 bay leaf, 4 cloves (laung), Β½ inch cinnamon, 2 petals of star anise (optional); the wholw spices can be substituted with Β½ to ΒΎ tbsp of garam masala powder;
Ground spices β 1 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp red chilli powder (or as per taste), 2 tsp coriander powder
Thick coconut milk β Β½ cup;
Cooking oil/coconut oil β 2-3 tbsp;
Salt to taste
Water β 1 Β½ to 2 cups
