Black chickpea curry/Kadala curry is a healthy and delicious Kerala style vegetarian/vegan recipe. Black chickpeas are a great source of plant protein. The curry is served with chapati/puttu/appam etc.

Ingredients for Kadala Curry:
Black chickpeas – 1 cup (2 ½ cups if soaked and cooked);
Onions – sliced, 2 ½ cups;
Tomato – ½ cup
Ginger and garlic – sliced, 1 tbsp each;
Green chillies – sliced, 1 or 2 (or as per taste);
Curry leaves – 8-10;
Dry red chillies – 2;
Mustard seeds – ½ tsp;
Whole spices – ½ tsp cumin(jeera), ½ tsp fennel seeds (saunf), 1 green cardamom (elaichi); 1 bay leaf, 4 cloves (laung), ½ inch cinnamon, 2 petals of star anise (optional); the wholw spices can be substituted with ½ to ¾ tbsp of garam masala powder;
Ground spices – 1 tsp turmeric powder, 1 tsp red chilli powder (or as per taste), 2 tsp coriander powder
Thick coconut milk – ½ cup;
Cooking oil/coconut oil – 2-3 tbsp;
Salt to taste
Water – 1 ½ to 2 cups
